Glamping 101
We've assembled one place to help decide whether glamping's right for you
What does glamping mean?
If you combine glamor and camping, you get “glamping”, which is an upscale way of staying in nature with all the amenities of modern life. It has become popular with modern tourists and families who want comfort coupled with the adventure of camping. While traditionally associated with staying in large tents, glamping sites offer a host of dwellings that range from themed RV trailers, to treehouses, or small cabins.
How does glamping work?
It’s just like camping, only more luxurious with comfy amenities. Think of the period films featuring the 1920’s with well-to-do explorers or archeologists venturing out to a desert dig or the deep heart of Africa, shacked up in spacious tents, but with all the amenities of civilization. Well, that’s what modern glamping is like. You can enjoy camping out in nature with the cozy amenities of a hotel without sleeping on the ground.

Where are the best California glamping locations?
With its vast and diverse landscape, California offers near limitless glamping possibilities. Ultimately, it comes down to personal choice on where to glamp.
Popular spots include Big Sur, Yosemite, Sonoma & Napa wine country, outside of the state's nine national parks, and the gold rush towns of the Sierra Nevada foothills.
If you want to stay in a tent in the heart of Northern California wine country, we'd be honored if you'd consider our location in the Russian River near Healdsburg. Our nearby activities include a mix of river, vineyards, redwood groves, a beautiful nearby lake (Lake Sonoma), and family-friendly hiking trails. We're also less than a hour's drive from the coast to such towns as Bodega Bay and Jenner.
Where should I go glamping in Northern California?
While the state offers a great variety of glamping options from San Diego to the Oregon border, Northern California has diverse options for the first-time glamper.
Your chances of finding a beautiful glamping site are good. Whether you prefer pine forests in the mountains, the bucolic scenery of wine country, or a beachfront view, the Northern California landscape offers something for everyone. If you are looking for a specific area to go glamping, a quick search will yield several glamping sites for Northern California, where there is no shortage of places to go. We think Wildhaven Sonoma is the best for a first-time glamper who is seeking a wide variety of natural activities.

Why should I go glamping?
Think camping but in style and comfort. You get to enjoy the best of nature without “roughing” it. Actually, glamping can be traced back to the days of nomadic tribes living in tents. Even kings and queens would stay in palatial-tents filled with all the creature comforts when they traveled. Glamping is a modern word, but the idea of camping comfortably is old. With glamping all you really have to do is show up; the rest is taken care of. Glamping also gives you more time to get out and explore, or to just relax and soak it all in. Glamping is perfect for those who want a bit of adventure combined with comfort.

Where can you glamp with dogs in California?
In truth, glamping sites are more accommodating and pet-friendly than many hotels. While many glamping sites are dog-friendly, they do have some rules regarding dogs and general courtesy towards other guests. We designed Wildhaven to be especially dog-friendly and would love to see your furry friends splashing around in the Russian River.
Wildhaven Sonoma's tents and property are all dog-friendly. If you bring your pups (maximum 2) we'd encourage you to first review our Dog Policies from our FAQ page.
Where is the best glamping near Big Sur, California?
With its rugged coastline that stretches for 90 miles, Big Sur is known for its unrivaled natural beauty. Along the route, you can find glamping sites in iconic redwood forests, quaint towns, forest reserves, and pristine beaches. We recommend places like Treebones and Ventana Big Sur.
While Big Sur offers some glamping experiences to fit any preference you have, we recommend traveling further north to experience the serenity of Wildhaven Sonoma's river and vineyards.
Can you go glamping in California's 9 National Parks?
Since National Parks are federal, you won’t find that many privately owned glamping sites in the parks themselves; however, a lot of glamping sites are within a short distance of National and State Parks. When is the best time for glamping on the California coast?
In beautiful, sunny California, anytime is the best time for glamping. The weather can change, and nights can get chilly, so layered clothing is a good idea.
The Sonoma region, where Wildhaven Sonoma is located, has mild weather year round, without any snow. We are open year round. In fact, we think off-season glamping is the best time to go. Why? That’s when you will find cheaper rates, packages with extra amenities , and more available booking dates. Plus, our tents and beds are heated to keep the night chill away.

Glamping Vs. Camping: which is best for you?
We believe everyone should try glamping at least once, even if they are a seasoned camper. With glamping, you still get to enjoy nature but on a higher level of comfort. Glamping also makes it easier to camp when it's colder out, or for people who can't easily crawl into a smaller tent and sleep on the ground
We designed Wildhaven to have the comfort and amenities of a hotel, but to still feel connected to the beauty of Sonoma County nature. Our tents are fully furnished, have electricity, and are heated.
Camping on the other hand requires you to do all the work: pack your own gear, set up the tent, and sleep on the ground in a sleeping bag. Ultimately it all comes down to personal preference, however, we recommend trying glamping and enjoying the best aspects of camping without all the hassles.

One popular destination for glamping is the Russian River, the second largest river that winds its way down from Mendocino and stretches over a 100 miles, finally exiting out through the Sonoma Coast at Jenner. Glamping is an entirely unique way of camping. And here is a short list of a few glamping sites that truly stand out. Wildhaven is nestled in the heart of wine country in Sonoma county, and located just off the Russian River, where we have heated tents with lots of amenities. So play in the river, explore one of several nearby wineries, or simply relax around camp enjoying nature. However you choose to spend your time, we’re confident you’ll love the whole experience.
Have you ever wanted to camp in an Airstream trailer? Well, Autocamp (also near the Russian river) gives you that unique chance to experience high-end trailer glamping, with the added benefit of not having to tow the trailer. The scenery around Autocamp is truly something to enjoy, as your trailer is tucked away in the midst of a verdant redwood forest. So stay up late and enjoy the sounds of the forest, while sitting around a campfire just outside the door of your trailer.
Another glamping site that takes camping to another level is Sonoma Zipline Adventures, which literally ups the levels of glamping. They offer yurt-style treehouses suspended above the ground, and connected by bridges. As a part of your stay you get two zipline tours and a breakfast in bed — luxury and adventure.
We could go and list several more unique glamping sites, but we like to keep things short and simple. Suffice it to say that the hardest part might be choosing a glamping site. But wherever you end up you’ll have a good time.
