You could visit Yosemite hundreds of times and still not see it all! Beyond its expansive natural beauty, Yosemite has a pretty wild history and some seriously strange facts you might not know. 👀 Here are 5 bizarre Yosemite facts that sound completely made up: 1️⃣ Starting in the 1870s, workers at Yosemite would build a bonfire at Glacier Point and push the glowing embers over the edge of the 3,000-foot cliff, creating what looked like a waterfall of fire. 🔥 The famous “Firefall” became a Yosemite tradition before finally ending in 1968. 2️⃣ Yosemite National Park is so massive that it’s bigger than the entire country of Luxembourg. 3️⃣ One of San Francisco’s main water sources actually comes from inside Yosemite. In the early 1900s, a massive dam was built across Hetch Hetchy Valley, flooding the valley to create a reservoir that now supplies water to about 2.7 million Bay Area residents. 4️⃣ Yosemite once had literal “bear pits” where tourists gathered to watch bears eat garbage. This was in the very early years and the management of Yosemite’s bears has since evolved, with bear incidents in 2020 down 98% since 1998. 5️⃣ In 1977, a plane carrying 5,000 pounds of marijuana crashed into a remote lake in Yosemite, and once word got out, “treasure hunters” began trekking into the wilderness hoping to recover the cargo. The situation eventually turned into a major law-enforcement operation, with authorities confiscating the marijuana and spending more than $67,000 on the investigation, salvage and recovery efforts.
